Oregon Highway Use Tax (HUT) Permit

Oregon's weight-mile tax applies to every heavy truck on its roads — including out-of-state carriers just passing through. We register your vehicles, handle the bond, file your quarterly returns, and pursue bond waiver after your first clean year.

What Is the Oregon HUT Permit?
Oregon's Highway Use Tax (HUT) is a weight-mile tax assessed on commercial motor vehicles with a combined weight of 26,000 lbs or more operating on Oregon public roads. It is one of the oldest weight-mile tax systems in the US.
Who Must Register?
Any carrier — in-state or out-of-state — operating a qualifying vehicle on Oregon highways must obtain an Oregon HUT account. This includes interstate carriers that only travel through Oregon without making stops.
Weight-Mile Tax Rates.
Oregon HUT rates are based on declared weight and axle configuration. Heavier vehicles pay a higher per-mile rate. Oregon updates its rate tables periodically and we stay current on all changes to ensure accurate filings.
Cash Bond May Be Required.
New carriers often must post a cash bond or surety bond before Oregon will issue HUT credentials. After 12 months of on-time quarterly filings, the bond requirement is typically waived. We manage the bond process from start to finish.
Bond Waived After 12 Months.
Carriers who maintain a clean filing record — one full year of timely quarterly returns — are eligible to have the cash bond requirement waived. We track your filing history and notify you when you qualify for bond release.
Quarterly Mileage Reporting.
Oregon HUT returns are filed quarterly and must include all miles operated within Oregon by each qualifying vehicle. Late filings incur penalties and interest. We handle every quarterly return on your behalf, year-round.
