MC Number — Motor Carrier Authority

Your MC number is your federal license to operate as a for-hire carrier in interstate commerce. We handle the entire application process — from FMCSA filing to insurance coordination — so your authority activates as fast as possible.

What Is an MC Number?
An MC (Motor Carrier) number is federal operating authority issued by the FMCSA that allows carriers to transport regulated commodities for hire in interstate commerce. It is separate from your DOT number.
Who Needs Operating Authority?
For-hire carriers transporting regulated goods across state lines, freight brokers, and freight forwarders are required to obtain operating authority (MC number) before conducting business.
Not the Same as a CA MCP.
The federal MC number is often confused with the California Motor Carrier Permit (CA MCP). The MC number is issued by FMCSA and is federally required. The CA MCP is a separate state requirement.
Insurance & BOC-3 Required.
Before your MC number becomes active, you must file proof of insurance meeting FMCSA minimums and a BOC-3 (process agent designation). We coordinate both filings on your behalf.
Nationwide Coverage.
We process MC number applications for carriers across all 50 states. Our team ensures all supporting documentation is filed correctly so your authority activates without delays.
21-Day Waiting Period.
After filing, there is a mandatory 21-day protest period before your MC authority becomes active. We file as early as possible to minimize wait time and keep your launch on schedule.
