Kentucky KYU Weight Distance Permit

Kentucky's KYU permit is required for any heavy truck crossing state lines into the Bluegrass State. We handle your KYU registration and quarterly mileage filings so you can run Kentucky freight with full confidence and zero compliance risk.

What Is the KYU Permit?
The KYU (Kentucky Unified Carrier Registration) permit is Kentucky's weight-distance tax credential. It is required for any commercial motor vehicle with a registered gross weight of 60,000 lbs or more operating on Kentucky highways.
Who Must Register?
All carriers — interstate and intrastate — operating vehicles at or above the 60,000 lb threshold in Kentucky must obtain a KYU number before their first trip through the state. There are no exemptions for out-of-state carriers just passing through.
Tax Calculated per Mile.
Kentucky charges a per-mile tax rate that varies by the declared gross weight of the vehicle. Rates are assessed each quarter based on actual miles driven within Kentucky. We calculate the correct rate for each unit in your fleet.
One KYU Number per Carrier.
Unlike some state permits, Kentucky issues one KYU number per carrier (not per vehicle). All qualifying vehicles in your fleet operate under the same KYU number, simplifying recordkeeping for large fleets.
Quarterly Filing Deadlines.
KYU tax returns are filed quarterly. Mileage for all qualifying vehicles must be reported within 30 days of each quarter's end. We track your filing calendar and submit accurate returns on time every quarter.
Steep Penalties for Non-Compliance.
Operating in Kentucky without a KYU number can result in fines, tax assessments with penalties and interest, and vehicle impoundment at weigh stations. We get you registered before you ever enter the state.
