California Permit

California Motor Carrier Permit (CA MCP)

The CA MCP is California's state-level operating permit for commercial carriers — different from both your federal MC number and your CA number. We handle the full application and keep your permit current every year so you can haul in California without interruption.

What Is the CA MCP?
The California Motor Carrier Permit (CA MCP) is issued by the California DMV and is required for any motor carrier transporting property for compensation on California highways. It is separate from your federal MC number and CA carrier number.
Who Needs a California MCP?
All for-hire carriers — both intrastate and interstate — operating commercial vehicles on California roads must obtain a CA MCP. This includes out-of-state carriers entering California for pick-up or delivery.
Insurance Filing Required.
Before your CA MCP is issued, you must file proof of liability insurance meeting California minimum coverage requirements directly with the CA DMV. We coordinate the insurance filing on your behalf.
Displayed in Your Cab.
The CA MCP card must be kept in the cab of every commercial vehicle operating in California. CHP officers and weigh station personnel verify its presence during roadside and port-of-entry inspections.
Annual Renewal.
The CA MCP must be renewed annually. Renewal notices are sent by the CA DMV, but failing to renew on time can result in permit cancellation and fines. We track your renewal date and handle the paperwork each year.
Bundle With CA Number.
Most carriers need both a CA number and a CA MCP. We process both applications simultaneously so you can get fully compliant in California with a single service request and avoid duplication of effort.
